Runaway giraffe on the loose in Texas

A giraffe is on the run in Texas, prompting an almost two-week-long manhunt.

On Monday, a plea was put out for information on the missing female giraffe, Gracie, who had not been seen for almost a week and a half.

The long-necked creature had distinctly rounded ears, according to Vick Jones, the manager of Cedar Hollow Ranch, asking locals in the town of Leakey to get in touch if they had any information on her whereabouts.

A $5,000 (£3,800) reward was on offer for information leading to the giraffe’s capture and safe return, Mr Jones said.

It was incorrectly reported that the giraffe had been found on Tuesday night, but this was debunked by Mr Jones.

“No, she has not been found. That’s just people having fun with the internet, getting their little one minute of fame,” Mr Jones told the website My San Antonio.

The animal arrived at the ranch, which is a privately owned breeding facility, in May. It is estimated to be around four years old and is a reticulated giraffe, meaning the coat pattern is smooth and clean, according to the New York Times.

The giraffe had taken a liking to a particular corner of the property and somehow managed to escape the enclosure, wandering into the Hill Country beyond the property.

The reticulated giraffe is native to northern Kenya and is listed as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources’ Red List.
