LeBron James ended his highly-publicized free agency process, signing a two-year contract with the Philadelphia 76ers ahead of his historic 24th NBA season.
James fielded pitches from several NBA players before he made his ultimate decision. Maxey, who’s also represented by James’ agent, Rich Paul, threw his hat in the ring with a couple texts and phone calls to The King.
However, Maxey said it didn’t take a lot of convincing for James to chose the 76ers.
“Not many. It wasn’t a lot of convincing. Couple phone calls, couple texts,” Maxey said, via team insider John Clark of NBC. “We’re good friends. Now, I guess we’re friends. He’s a lot older than me, but I guess we’re friends.”
In addition to James, the 76ers also added five-time NBA All-Star Jaylen Brown in a blockbuster trade with the Eastern Conference-rival Boston Celtics. Philadelphia’s projected starting five now consists of James, Maxey, Brown, Joel Embiid and VJ Edgecombe.
Maxey is fresh off the best season of his NBA career so far, averaging a career-high 28.3 points per game in 2025-26. The 25-year-old guard was the second leading scorer in the Eastern Conference, trailing only Brown (28.7 ppg).
The 76ers are one of the leading contenders to come out of the Eastern Conference this coming season.
