The Indiana Fever opened their season Saturday afternoon against the Dallas Wings, and while they fell 107-104, Caitlin Clark still made WNBA history.
In her 54th career game as she enters her third season, Clark became the fastest player in league history to record 1,000 career points, 250-plus assists, and 250-plus rebounds, breaking Diana Taurasi’s previous record of 62 games.
After the WNBA shared the accomplishment following Clark’s 20-point performance against Dallas, she received a congratulatory message from LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers, who has long been one of her most vocal supporters.
James reposted the graphic on his Instagram story and wrote, “CONGRATS [Caitlin Clark],” along with several applauding emojis.
Clark recently spoke with ESPN ahead of the WNBA season, discussing her relationship with LeBron James, who has continued to support her throughout her career. Clark said she deeply appreciates his understanding of the pressure that comes with being in the spotlight.
“He understands the microscope that I’m under and the spotlight that’s on me,” Clark said. “When I was hurt last year, he reached out and was like, ‘Is there any way I can help you? Is there anybody I can connect you with?’ And I think that’s a lot of our relationship now — and then a little bit of golf. We text about golf, and that’s next on our bucket list, to play golf together.”
James is currently in the middle of a playoff run that could be nearing its end, as the Lakers trail the Thunder 3-0 in their best-of-seven second-round series.
Meanwhile, Clark is back on the court after appearing in just 13 games last season due to a season-ending groin injury she suffered prior to the All-Star break.
